Two people have died after crashing their car into a tree shortly after police spotted them travelling at high speed on the wrong side of the road at night with their headlights turned off.

A WA police spokesman said a marked police car attempted to intercept the Holden Calais sedan at about 9:45pm last night on North Lake Road in Cockburn, but decided to abort the pursuit when the vehicle went onto the wrong side of the road.

Two people were found inside the car deceased while another two were taken away by ambulance, with one suffering serious injuries.

Major crash investigators have been inspecting the scene.
