A Perth man has been charged with punching two airline staff who questioned his sobriety prior to boarding a flight to Melbourne.

The 43-year-old punched the first staff member on Monday night for asking how much alcohol he had drunk, before hitting the second airline employee who went to their colleague's defence, say the Australian Federal Police.

AFP officers arrived at the scene and arrested the man.

The 43-year-old was charged with two counts of assault and faced Perth Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

AFP Commander Matt Rippon warned the public of the serious consequences of violent or aggressive behaviour towards airline staff.

"Everyone has a right to feel safe while doing their jobs and it is no different at our airports around the country," he said in a statement.

"Incidents involving assault, abuse and general anti-social behaviour are unacceptable and perpetrators will be prosecuted where criminal offences are identified."
