One-punch killer's sentence cut in WA

A man convicted of unlawfully killing an Irishman in a one-punch attack outside a Perth kebab shop has successfully appealed the length of his sentence.

Abbas Yahya Al Jrood struck stranger Thomas Jay Keaney, 23, from behind without warning in Northbridge in December 2013, causing him to fall and hit his head on the pavement.

In the West Australian Court of Appeal on Tuesday, Al Jrood's sentence was reduced from nine years to seven years and he remains eligible for parole.

In a unanimous decision, the judges said they were persuaded that the trial judge erred by failing to take into account the appellant's minimal risk of reoffending.

"I have reduced the sentence I would otherwise have imposed for the appellant's youth, prior good character, remorse, victim empathy, acceptance of responsibility and minimal risk of reoffending," Justice Carmel McLure said.
