No convictions over political prayer vigil

Seven church leaders who organised a sit-in prayer vigil at the Perth office of Justice Minister Michael Keenan have been given spent convictions and insist their actions were motivated by kindness.

Chris Bedding, Miles Flavel, Stephen Conway, Gail Falconer, Trevor Burt, Ruth Vertigan and Vicky Burrows - who are part of the Catholic, Anglican, Uniting and Church of Christ faiths - were handed conditional release orders in Perth Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

They entered Mr Keenan's Innaloo office on February 20 after the High Court ruled it was legal for Australia to send 267 people, including Australian-born babies, back to the immigration detention centre on Nauru.

They quietly prayed and were charged with trespassing when the office was due to close.

The group is part of a national movement of Christians called Love Makes A Way, which uses non-violent action to draw attention to the treatment of people seeking asylum.

"We are really grateful that the magistrate recognised we didn't do it as a flagrant disrespect of the law," Reverend Bedding told AAP.

"We were motivated by kindness."
