McGowan has 'no regrets' on his last day as WA premier

Mark McGowan said he has "no regrets" on his last day as premier of Western Australia.

McGowan looked noticeably relaxed and feeling "good" as he arrived for his final day in the job, saying he was confident in Roger Cook's ability to lead the state in his wake.

He made light-hearted jokes with the media as he arrived at his office to collect his things.

"Roger and Rita are terrific, they'll do a great job," he said.

"My main emotion is gratitude and thanks and I will always, always feel that"

McGowan, 55, walks away from the top job with a more than $250,000 a year pension.

He's retiring after 27 years in parliament, with six of those as premier.

McGowan says he will spend his extra time with his wife, kids and dog.

He will not give a valedictory speech when the house sits again in two weeks.

"I think people have heard enough from me, I just want to go to becoming a quiet, ordinary person," he said.

"I'm going to go back to being an ordinary person, that is my ambition.

"No second thoughts, I'm not regretting it.

"That's a good thing actually, I'm glad I don't have second thoughts."

His deputy Cook now takes over as the state's leader.
