A man who allegedly broke into a Perth house where a 12-year-old boy was home alone has been charged with assaulting the child.

The 22-year-old man allegedly broke into the home through a window at 12.30am on Saturday.

He's accused of grabbing the boy and telling him to be quiet before stealing items from the house.

Police allege that during the boy's ordeal, the man pushed him over and tried to punch him before the child was able to run away to family at a nearby residence.

When police arrived, they saw a man attempting to flee over a wall at the back of the property.

Police dog Freddie bit the man on the face during a struggle and he was taken to hospital for treatment.

Due to the man's aggression, he was sedated and kept under police guard at the hospital, police said.

He was charged on Sunday with aggravated burglary, stealing and common assault.

He is due to appear in Perth Magistrates Court on November 21.
