Killers appeal Perth train station murder

Five men who were jailed for life over a murder near a Perth train station hours after Australia Day celebrations in 2016 are appealing.

Patrick Slater, 26, was assaulted with an array of makeshift weapons including a star picket and a pole, then stabbed through the heart with a screwdriver in a group attack near the Esplanade train station.

Christopher James Birdsall, Dylan Terrance Wayne Anthony, Clinton Fredrick Mead, his brother Stefan Lazba Mead and Robert Christopher James Pickett were convicted of Mr Slater's murder after a Supreme Court of WA trial last year.

Two juveniles, who cannot be named, were also convicted and jailed.

A third juvenile - who was aged 11 at the time of the attack - was also convicted and sentenced last year after separate Children's Court proceedings.

Birdsall, who at 29 was the oldest in the group, is appealing his sentence, while one of the children and Stefan Mead are challenging their convictions.

Anthony, Pickett and Clinton Mead are appealing both their convictions and sentences.

Hearings were held in the WA Court of Appeal on Monday.
