The man who shoved a lemon meringue pie into the face of Qantas CEO Alan Joyce this week as a protest against corporate support for same-sex marriage has been charged with assault.

Tony Overheu sparked international media coverage when he strolled up to Mr Joyce and shoved a $25.95 lemon meringue pie in his face during a speech at a business breakfast at Perth's Hyatt Regency hotel on Tuesday.

The 67-year-old from Willetton has been charged with common assault, trespass and damage and is due to appear before the Perth Magistrates Court on June 7.
