Human skeletal remains have been found at the the building site of the new WA Museum in Perth and the Homicide Squad has been brought in.

The human bones were found on Wednesday, leading to the shutdown of the construction site at the Perth Cultural Centre area at Northbridge .

The remains were confirmed as human following forensic tests and a police investigation has begun.

"Inquiries will be conducted in an attempt to identify the circumstances as to how the remains came to be there," a police statement said.

The previous government started the museum project, with nearly $400 million budgeted towards it and an intended open date of 2020.
