Homes under threat from WA bushfire

Home and lives are possibly under threat from a bushfire burning near a town in Western Australia's Pilbara region, prompting authorities to issue a watch and act alert.

Those living in Walcott Drive and adjacent streets of Wickham, east of Karratha, have been advised by the state's Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) to leave or prepare to defend property.

"The bushfire is moving fast in a south easterly direction," the DFES said in its warning.

"It is out of control and unpredictable."

The cause of the fire is considered suspicious.

Bush Fire Service members as well as volunteers are tackling the blaze, which was reported to authorities late Monday morning.

No roads have been closed and DFES advises people to retreat to the homes of friends and families.

"Avoid the area and be aware of fire and other emergency services personnel working on site," it said.

Maximum temperatures of 41 degrees and higher have been recorded in nearby Roebourne during the past five days, the ABC reports.
