Hawks ex-recruit facing serious charges

A young former Hawthorn Football Club recruit who walked away from his professional sporting career because he found it too demanding is facing burglary and stealing charges.

West Australian Police allege Dayle Kevin Garlett, 20, committed a burglary at a Greenmount home on Saturday, and have charged him with aggravated burglary and commit, and stealing.

Garlett was also charged with stealing a motor vehicle from Caversham on September 11.

After appearing in the Midland Magistrate's Court in Perth's east on Wednesday, he was remanded in custody and will next appear in court on September 26.

Garlett was a champion junior footballer, but all 18 AFL clubs declined to draft him in 2012 due to concerns about his off-field behaviour.

Hawthorn took a punt on him last year, but he left by mutual consent early this season with Garlett saying he couldn't cope with the demands of being a professional footballer, also citing homesickness.
