More than a dozen Western Australian Perth Mint customers have been caught up in a data hack.

Data has been taken from a third-party provider relating to 13 customers of the mint's precious metals Depository Online trading platform.

"We sincerely regret any distress caused by the misconduct of these unlawful individuals who are responsible for the breach," Perth Mint chief executive Richard Hayes said in a statement on Saturday.

"We have assured these customers that their investments remain safe and secure."

My Hayes added those customers were being advised on how to prevent the misuse of their personal information, and stressed the Perth Mint's system's remained secure.

The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner, and the WA and federal police were being informed of the data breach, discovered on Wednesday.

"We are working with the external third-party provider to understand how this breach occurred and and have taken steps to remediate the identified threats" Mr Hayes said.
