Guilty verdict for wanted people smuggler

A man once described as one of the nation's most wanted kingpin people smugglers has been found guilty of bringing boats to the country in 2009 and 2011.

Sayed Abbas was convicted this week by a jury in the District Court of Western Australia on three charges of illegally organising the transport to Australia of 209 asylum seekers on three boats in 2009 and 2011.

The 35-year-old Afghan national was extradited to Australia in August 2015 when a court in Jakarta granted an Australian government application, but he had been in and out of jail in Indonesia for people smuggling offences since 2010.

When fighting his extradition in 2013, he claimed he was an informant for the Australian Federal Police on other people smugglers' plans but was then abandoned by them.

Abbas was remanded in custody and will face a sentencing hearing on September 15.
