The bus driver involved in a crash that killed a mother and her three children in Western Australia's Goldfields region is in a stable condition in hospital after suffering a heart attack.

Emmet Moyo, 38, her daughters Sibonginkosi and Sibusiso, aged eight and five, and her one-year-old son Sandulo died when their small car collided head-on with the bus on the Goldfields Highway between Kalgoorlie and Kambalda just before 7pm on Sunday.

They were on their way home from a church service at the Forward in Faith Pentecostal Church.

The woman's husband had flown to Zimbabwe on Friday and was told the terrible news on Monday night.

A Royal Flying Doctor Service spokesman said it wasn't clear if the bus driver had the heart attack when she was behind the wheel or after the crash.

Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital says the woman is in a stable condition.
