No arrests in Fortescue drug raids

A morning drug raid at Fortescue Metals Group's Christmas Creek mine has resulted in no arrests.

A company spokesman told AAP about 300 workers from two inbound flights to the Pilbara site were stopped by police and a sniffer dog for drug tests on Tuesday.

One contractor was issued a summons for possessing drugs without a prescription and another is awaiting further lab tests after returning a "non-negative" result.

Fortescue chief executive Nev Power said the company was leading an industry-wide anti-drug operation in conjunction with WA police.

"Any single person affected by drugs on our mine site is one too many," Mr Power told ABC radio.

WA police regional commander Murray Smalpage said more police "actions" as part of the crackdown could be expected soon.

WA Chamber of Minerals and Energy chief executive Reg Howard-Smith welcomed the police efforts, saying the use of illicit substances and alcohol are critical safety issues in the resources sector.

The Australian Mines and Metals Association says it understands other resource companies will be targeted in the police operation.
