Fire bans in place across WA

Extreme fire danger warnings have been issued for parts of central west WA and the Gascoyne region with authorities imposing a total fire ban in the area's midwest.

Hot, dry and windy conditions on Saturday mean if a fire breaks out it will move quickly and unpredictably and will be difficult for firefighters to contain.

"You must be physically and mentally prepared to defend in these conditions," the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) said.

Areas around greater Geraldton, Chapman Valley, Northampton, Mingenew, Morawa, Carnarvon and Shark Bay are at risk.

"You must not light or use any fires in the open air," the DFES said.

"You must not undertake any other activities that may start a fire."

Anyone caught breaking the ban could be fined up to $25,000, jailed for 12 months or both.
