The family of Perth surfer Ben Gerring, who died after his leg was bitten off by a shark, have visited the beach where he was attacked.

Despite a team of specialists working around the clock to save Mr Gerring, his injuries were too great.

The 29-year-old died on Friday night in Royal Perth Hospital, where his family - including his pregnant fiance Jasmine - had been keeping a bedside vigil.

His family was supported by friends when they visited Gearies break at Falcon Beach yesterday afternoon.

His brother Rick thanked the "heroes" who helped Mr Gerring from the water and emergency services for trying to save him.

"Ben loved the ocean, but his great love is and always will be Jasmine," he told reporters.

The family is now preparing arrangements for a funeral.
