Livestock stranded on export ship in WA

A ship carrying about 13,000 live sheep and cattle remains stranded in Western Australia after an engine problem.

The MV Ocean Outback was leaving Fremantle on Tuesday night when one of its two engines developed mechanical issues.

The ship is owned by Wellard Live Exports but is under charter by Otway Livestock Exports.

In a statement to the Australian Securities Exchange, Wellard company secretary Greg Wheeler said the departure was delayed as a precautionary measure.

"Safety and animal welfare considerations will be at the forefront of any decision made by Wellard and the charterer of the vessel," he said.

"Feed, water and ventilation to the livestock on board are unaffected by the engine issue."

Mr Wheeler said the MV Ocean Outback was designed and built with a dual independent propulsion system, which meant it could safely operate with one engine.

The Australian Livestock Exporters' Council said there were about 7400 sheep on board and 5600 feeder cattle.

It said additional supplies would be delivered to the vessel as required.
