Elderly driver cleared of cyclist hit-and-run in Perth

An elderly Mandurah driver has been cleared of a hit and run crash that killed a cyclist.

After three hours of deliberations, a jury found Keith Michael Osman not guilty of three charges, and he walked free from court.

The 74-year-old was accused of failing to give way to Gabriele Schiller-Brett at a roundabout in Halls Head in 2016, hitting the cyclist, and then and driving off.

During the six day trial, the jury heard Mr Osman had no recollection of the crash and that he may have been suffering a medical episode, brought on by type 2 diabetes and sleep apnoea.

His lawyer also argued there was no evidence to prove that he was the driver.

This afternoon, there were sobs from the public gallery, which was packed mostly with his friends and family.

Mr Osman made no comment as he left court with his lawyer.

One of his supporters said it was a fair verdict.
