WA Premier still refusing to be drawn on border reopening date amid Victoria's coronavirus spike

Western Australian Premier Mark McGowan is standing by his decision not to name a date to reopen his state's border as the state prepares to reopen its nightclubs, live concerts and sports stadiums this weekend.

Mr McGowan described the current spike of coronavirus cases in Victoria "a worry for all of us" and said he would not considering loosening the state's hard border closure until it was under control.

When questioned whether he was under pressure from interstate to reopen, he acknowledged "clearly there is a difference of opinion between myself and some of the other premiers and perhaps the Commonwealth government".

But he remained resolute the closure was in the best interests of Western Australians.

"We have the most open, vibrant, active economy of any state in Australia by a long, long way," he said.

"The numbers of people who are going back to work tomorrow, the numbers of people who can attend sporting and other events in Western Australia, the people who can go to theatres and arts events in Western Australia, is many, many multiples of any other state in Australia.

"We've got our economy open in part because we have a hard border with the east.

"We will bring the border down with the east in due course, when it is the right time to do so."

From midnight tonight, all but the loosest coronavirus restrictions will be lifted in the state, with the current four-square metre rule replaced by a watered-down two-square metre rule.

Residents in the state will be allowed to stand up at the pub, attend sporting matches and even crowd onto the dancefloor of a nightclub or live concert.

Patrons at pubs, bars and other venues will no longer have to remain seated and the requirement for businesses to maintain a register of customers will also be removed.

Gyms will be allowed to operate unstaffed with strict cleaning protocols, and the casino gaming floors will be reopened under temporary restrictions.

The state's major sporting venues will be allowed to fill up to 50 per cent of their capacity, meaning 30,000 fans will be able to fill Optus Stadium to watch a game while 10,000 will be able to crowd into HBF Park.

But the premier urged Western Australians to "do the right thing".

"We just urge people to be sensible and reasonable," he said.

"Where you can, social distance – obviously on the dance floor you can't – and engage in appropriate hygiene."
