Concert to raise funds for WA fire victims

Southbound festival has been transformed into a fundraising concert for Western Australian bushfire victims.

Disclosure, Bloc Party and Birds of Tokyo will headline at the HBF Stadium in Mount Claremont on Sunday after the Southbound festival in Perth's south was cancelled over safety concerns.

Acting WA Premier Kim Hames said the concert's profits would go directly to a bushfire appeal for the victims of fires that razed the state's southwest.

"(It) is a worthwhile cause and a very real way of channelling some of the grief into a positive outcome," he said.

There had been an outpouring of support from music fans after the three-day music festival in Busselton was shut down.

"Right call by #Southbound organisers - in spite of hard work/disappointment, safety paramount. My thoughts all affected by #WaroonaFire," Rania Ghandour tweeted.

Festival director David Chitty said everyone on site was "absolutely devastated" by the decision to cancel the event.

"We have no option but to cancel this year's event. We cannot compromise patron safety and proceed knowing people's lives are at risk getting to the event," a statement on the festival's website said.

"Everyone on site is absolutely devastated as we were working so hard to bring the best Southbound yet.

"Our thoughts are with those in danger due to the nearby fire."

The fire has been ravaging Waroona, Harvey and surrounding areas, including Preston Beach, in Western Australia's Peel and South West regions, since Wednesday.
