The City of Perth has sacked its chief executive Gary Stevenson, choosing to "set a new direction" for the city this year.

A City of Perth spokesman said on Wednesday that Mr Stevenson had told the council he accepted and respected the decision to terminate his contract.

Planning and development director Martin Mileham has been appointed acting chief executive.

"Council thanks Mr Stevenson for his contribution to the City of Perth, in particular his leadership in local government reform and organisational development," a statement said.

The termination comes after a tumultuous year for the City of Perth and its Mayor Lisa Scaffidi, who the Corruption and Crime Commission found had engaged in serious misconduct.

The damning CCC report found she had failed to declare gifts including a $US36,800 BHP Billiton-funded hospitality package for the Beijing Olympics.

But Ms Scaffidi was still re-elected for a third term in October.

Last week, Ms Scaffidi said she had not been contacted over an ongoing Department of Local Government investigation, which was launched after the CCC findings were handed down.
