Charges dropped against WA cycling coach

A senior cycling coach cleared of inappropriately touching teenage athletes during therapeutic massages says the ordeal was a "witch hunt" that ruined his life.

Former head cycling coach at the West Australian Institute of Sport, Darryl Benson, stood trial in the WA District Court earlier this year, charged with five counts each of indecently assaulting and indecently dealing with three teenage girls.

Each complainant had back injuries and visited Mr Benson's home for massage treatments.

Mr Benson was acquitted during the trial of two indecent assault charges and then a jury found him not guilty of a further five offences, but could not reach a verdict on the three remaining counts.

At a trial listing hearing on Friday, the prosecution discontinued those three charges.

Mr Benson, who established a very successful cycling program that produced Olympians, told reporters outside court he was relieved with the decision but disappointed the accusations got so far.

"It was a witch hunt that destroyed my life," he said.

Champion cyclist Josie Bobridge, formerly known as Josie Tomic, was among Mr Benson's supporters and described him as a man of integrity, a father figure and mentor.

"He was never anything but professional towards me and towards others," she said.

Mr Benson, who resigned from WAIS in 2014, said he was unsure if he would coach again.
