Buswell 'got off lightly' after crashes

Troy Buswell got off lightly after he smashed into parked cars, a pole and a gate as he drove home from a wedding, the West Australian premier concedes.

The 2014 incident that ended Mr Buswell's political career has emerged again after a Corruption and Crime Commission (CCC) report released on Wednesday made no findings against the former treasurer, noting he had been convicted of 11 traffic offences, paid for damage and was suffering a mental illness.

The former treasurer and transport minister was fined $3100 and disqualified from driving for one year, but he was not charged with drink driving because he did not undergo a breathalyser test.

"Maybe he was lucky in the sense that he got off more lightly than he could have," Premier Colin Barnett told ABC radio on Thursday.

An internal inquiry did not find Mr Buswell's chief of staff Rachael Turnseck had breached the state government's code of conduct, but the CCC concluded she had engaged in misconduct by providing misleading information about the incident.

The CCC found she put her loyalty to Mr Buswell above her duty to the state, effectively covering up for him.

"This was a crisis and it was someone acting out of their heart and their emotions, rather than as they should have done," Mr Barnett told parliament.

"The Department of the Premier and Cabinet acted on the information that was available and that was relying on the former chief of staff."
