Bushfire warnings for WA's south

Firefighters have contained a deadly bushfire in Western Australia's South West, but are yet to bring it under control.

An emergency warning remains in place in the shires of Harvey and Waroona, while a second fire poses a possible threat to lives and homes in the state's far south.

Areas including Hamel, Yarloop and east of Waroona are still under threat from a fire that has already claimed two lives and burnt more than 72,600 hectares and wiped out 143 properties.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services says firefighters have made significant progress along the northern boundary on either side of Waroona, while work to strengthen and consolidate containment lines continues.

Downed power lines and debris near Preston Beach means it is not safe to evacuate for residents to leave the area, according to DFES.

Several community meetings are planned for Waroona, Leschenault and Murray on Sunday.

An emergency warning for the towns of Cookernup and Harvey was downgraded to a watch and act on Sunday morning.

Meanwhile, a watch and act warning remains in place for people in the Dalyup area, west of Esperance in the state's far south, as firefighters work to control a slow-moving blaze.
