Arrests after gun, bomb scare in Perth CBD

Two men have been arrested after loaded firearms and a suspicious package were found at Royal Perth Hospital in the city's CBD.

Police were called to the hospital about 9.45am on Thursday after a bag containing the package and two modified firearms was discovered in a ward.

Parts of the hospital were evacuated while bomb squad officers removed the package to a safe location for further testing.

About 2pm, another suspicious package was found on a table at the Timpano Legal criminal law firm on Hay Street, two blocks from the hospital.

Lawyer Shane Brennan, who saw the package before he was evacuated, said it was a bum bag.

Mr Brennan said he was told by police the item had been left by the person who was apprehended at the hospital with a "pipe bomb" and firearms.

No items of interest were found inside the bum bag.

The WA Police Union said it understood the man who left the package at the Hay Street office was heading to the District Court.

A 30-year-old man of no fixed address and a 29-year-old man of Aveley have been arrested.

An RPH spokesman said the evacuation was disturbing.

"We deal with very vulnerable individuals and it's alarming, it's disturbing and it's very saddening," he said.

Police have since left both sites.
