Artificial reefs in WA are attracting fish

The number of fish species at Western Australia's first trial artificial reefs in the state's South West region has soared from 12 to 50 in two years.

Department of Fisheries' researchers have noted significant marine growth on the 60 reef modules, which it says is building a good habitat for fish and giving anglers new fishing spots.

Fisheries Minister Ken Baston said the reefs had provided habitat for three target species in the area - Samsonfish, snapper and skippy - as well as other marine life, such as corals.

He said it gave confidence for similar reefs to be located elsewhere off the WA coast.
