An arsonist has targeted Perth train station overnight, causing $500,000 damage.

It's alleged the man, in his 30s, lit fire to a number of bins in the city and Northbridge before targeting the information centre at the station around 3am.

Six fire crews arrived at the blaze around 3:20am, managing to put it out before it spread onto the platform.

The information centre has sustained significant damage, with windows blown out and smoke damage to the walls.

No trains or buses have been affected, but the Wellington Street entrance has been closed to pedestrians for most of the morning.

The Arson Squad is investigating and a man is in police custody.
