Arrest after WA basketballer grabbed gun

A 38-year-old basketball player who was angry at the referee went to his car, grabbed a handgun, hid it under his jumper and was about to threaten him, police say.

He was then talked out of it by his friends, according to police.

Witnesses called police after the incident occurred at the Melville Recreation Centre in Perth on Monday night.

Fremantle police arrested the man after viewing CCTV footage and conducting raids on the man's home and car and say they seized a 9mm handgun.

The Attadale man has been charged with being armed in a way that may cause fear and carry or use unlicensed handgun or prescribed firearm.

He was released on bail to appear before the Fremantle Magistrates Court on June 26.
