Alan Bond's Red Dingo connection confirmed

Alan Bond's ex-wife has set the record straight on the West Australian tycoon's involvement with Perth's iconic Dingo Flour Mill after decades of debate.

A day after the WA government committed more than $80,000 to the restoration of the mill and the giant red dingo image that adorns it, Eileen Bond confirmed Bond had indeed played a part in repainting it during his time as a sign writer.

"Sure, Alan painted it many years ago, but over it obviously," Ms Bond told AAP on Wednesday.

She said her grandchildren often mentioned the dingo as they drove past the mill.

The dingo was originally painted 75 years ago by Les Nash, WA Heritage Minister Albert Jacob told parliament on Tuesday.

"It has been touched up and repainted, but that dingo sign is still on the original corrugated steel sheets on which it was placed in 1940 and still stands as the original design," Mr Jacob said.

Ms Bond's cousin and Perth car dealing giant John Hughes said he believed the late entrepreneur was involved in the touch-up when he was an apprentice for a Fremantle sign writing company.

"It really is a distinctive sign. I'm a Fremantle boy and I've driven past it a million times - it's an iconic landmark," Mr Hughes said.
