An aggressive 3.5-metre white shark has damaged a surfer's board, prompting authorities to issue a warning at a popular spot in Western Australia's south during the school holidays.

The shark warning has been issued for North Point, near Gracetown, following the incident on Monday evening, and beaches have been closed up to Lefthanders surfing spot until Thursday.

It is not known whether the damage to the surfboard was caused by the shark bumping or biting it.
