Abbott sneaks into WA for Hastie visit

Former PM Tony Abbott has made a second visit to WA this federal election campaign, this time lending support to Liberal MP Andrew Hastie who was booted out of the Army Reserve this week.

Mr Abbott has visited Mandurah, in the federal seat of Canning, to tour the Port Bouvard Surf Lifesaving Club and enjoy a steak and shandy at a local tavern.

Mr Abbott's office said the former PM is standing behind Mr Hastie, a former SAS officer who was ousted from the reserves by the Australian Defence Force after refusing to remove photographs of himself in military uniform on election advertising.

Mr Abbott also addressed mature-aged voters on the government's superannuation policy in a planned appearance at the Cobblers Tavern before posing for photographs, staff said.

"Everyone wanted to get a selfie with him, he's a bit of a rock star actually," staff told AAP.
