About 1000 protesters have marched in Fremantle against the contentious Perth Freight Link project as uncertainty surrounds plans for the second stage.

The protesters turned out for the Fremantle Festival finale on Sunday, when News Corp quoted West Australian Premier Colin Barnett as saying it could be 12 months before a decision is made about stage two.

Plans for stage one, the controversial Roe 8 highway extension, are well underway, with federal environmental approval and the preferred proponent to build it announced in recent days.

On Friday, Greens senator Scott Ludlam labelled the federal-funded project "the next James Price Point", referring to the Woodside-led gas plan in the Kimberley that was shelved following a public backlash, although the company cited financial reasons.
