WA won't pick up seniors funding shortfall

Commonwealth cuts to seniors and pensioners concessions will not be covered by the West Australian government, Premier Colin Barnett says.

WA will miss out on $25 million this financial year as a result of the cuts in the 2014/15 budget.

Mr Barnett said the state was not the only one to be surprised the Commonwealth had "walked away" from a national partnership agreement on concessions for seniors and pensioners.

"We didn't expect to see it coming but it happened," the Liberal leader told state parliament on Tuesday.

"We're not pleased about that.

"The West Australian government will not be replacing that.

"We are going through the process now of looking where changes may be made and to spread them widely and thinly. It has forced a revamp. In the longer term, there will be a review."

He said the cuts would affect seniors "to a small degree".

Separately, opposition transport spokesman Ken Travers took aim at the state government for charging seniors $2 a day to park at train stations.

"Pensioners have been hit hard enough with the changes by the federal and the state government," Mr Travers said.
