WA Senate candidate doesn't seek publicity

Labor's media-shy lead candidate for the West Australian Senate election says he's quietly getting on with the job of fighting for workers, rather than fronting cameras.

Joe Bullock, the shop assistants' union state secretary who shunted Louise Pratt from the top spot on the party's Senate ticket, has rarely fronted the media.

But after his appearance at Labor's campaign launch on Sunday ahead of the April 5 poll, Mr Bullock paired up with opposition employment and workplace relations spokesman Brendan O'Connor at a press conference in Perth on Monday.

He made only a brief appearance in the TV advertisement launched over the weekend, which heavily features member for Perth Alannah MacTiernan, while the voice of state Labor leader Mark McGowan has been used in automated dial-outs to the homes of voters.

"I have to say in all modesty that Mark is far better known and far more popular across Western Australia," Mr Bullock said.

"I saw myself in the ads last night and I'm here today.

"I do all the media that I'm asked to do.

"But then again, a lot of the work that I do and have done for years is just quietly working on behalf of working people, without seeking a lot of publicity for it."
