WA public transport tap-on delay hits 18 months

A promise to introduce mobile phone and credit card tap-on payments to Western Australia's public transport has been delayed again, now 18 months behind schedule. 

Transport Minister Rita Saffioti set a mid-year target for the project's completion in January, which would still be a year behind schedule, but on Wednesday Premier Roger Cook admitted that timeline had blown out even further. 

The premier revealed the technology would not be in place until the end of this year.

The delay is attributed to issues with installing payment machines on buses, with only 400 out of 1750 vehicles currently equipped.

Liberal leader Libby Mettam criticised the Labor government, saying voters could not trust their handling of major transport projects.
