A man in his 30s has been shot and killed by police in Western Australia following a violent confrontation early this morning.

Officers were called to a home on Fremantle Road in Gosnells around 1am following calls of a disturbance at the property.

When they arrived they were confronted by a man with a knife, who allegedly stabbed one of the officers during a violent struggle.

The man was hit with both OC spray and a taser but the struggle did not end until he was shot by one of the officers.

"There was quite a violent struggle prior to that and police were doing everything they could to subdue the male," WA Police Deputy Commissioner Col Blanch said.

"No officer expects to go to work and have this occur to them."

Two police officers who attended the Gosnells home were injured and taken to Armadale Hospital.

Police said there was no threat to the Gosnells community, but urged the public to avoid the area.

An investigation is underway and all officers involved in the incident will be placed on leave, as is protocol for fatal police shootings.
