Former Perth Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas elected as WA opposition leader

Former broadcaster and Perth Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas has been elected unopposed as the leader of the WA Liberals.

Zempilas was confirmed as the state's opposition leader at a party room meeting at WA's Parliament House this morning.

Former leader Libby Mettam was elected unopposed as the deputy leader a week after she announced she would not seek re-election to the top spot.

Following his election, Zempilas used his speech to thank Mettam for her service and described her approach to the position as "incredibly stoic".

The new WA Liberals leader also thanked outgoing deputy leader Steve Martin for his service.

Zempilas described the opportunity to lead the party as a "great honour" and "very humbling" as he announced his intentions moving forward.

"We will prioritise excellence, not just amongst ourselves, but excellence for Western Australia," he said.

"We will be rigorous, and it's something that many of us heard during our election campaigns, something that there is a longing for amongst the people of Western Australia.

"We will always champion and prioritise common sense."
