The 67-year-old was the first veterinarian elected to the Senate in 2009.

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull tonight acknowledged Senator Back’s retirement in an official statement.

“Senator Back was an indefatigable advocate for the West, particularly ensuring the agricultural , agribusiness and resources sectors had strong voices in the senate,” Mr Turnbull wrote.

“I thank him for his tireless committee work and representation of rural and regional Australia.”

Earlier former prime minister Tony Abbott praised Senator Back's common sense perspectives, and said the parliament “needed more people from broad backgrounds”.
