Firefighters battle multiple blazes south of Perth

Out-of-control bushfires continue to ravage parts of the Peel Region near Perth in Western Australia with residents unable to return home more than 24 hours after the blazes began.

An emergency warning was in place on Sunday night for the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale, as reinforcements are brought in from interstate.

The fire has burnt through more than 200 hectares.

Locals said they fled.

"As I was pulling out my driveway, I could see a wall of flames behind me," Robyn said.

"The flames were quite furious and the wind was horrific," Terry said.

At one point crews were faced with more than 100 fires across the southern half of the state.

In Piara Waters, a fire tore through a suburban playground.

Cars were also torched and sheds wrecked.

So far more than 1500 hectares has been burnt in the Serpentine blazes. In Nambeelup, it's almost 300 hectares and in North Dandalup more than 100 hectares has been wiped out.
