WA Premier takes on Treasurer role after crushing election win

Fresh off a crushing election win, Western Australia Premier Mark McGowan has declared he will serve as both Premier and Treasurer in a new-look state Cabinet.

Former state treasurer Ben Wyatt announced last year he would resign from politics following the state election.

Deputy Premier Roger Cook will continue in both that role and as Health Minister.

The Cabinet will welcome five new faces, including Perth MP John Carey as Housing and Local Government Minister.

Armadale MP Dr Tony Buti will become Finance Minister, and also take the portfolios for Lands, Sport and Recreation, Citizenship and Multicultural Interests.

Morley MP Amber-Jade Sanderson will become Minister for Environment, Climate Action, and Commerce.

Reece Whitby, elected to the seat of Baldivis, will be Minister for Emergency Services, Races and Gaming, Small Business, and Volunteering.

Bunbury MP Don Punch will become Minister for Disability Services, Fisheries, Innovation and ICT, and Seniors and Ageing.

"Being a Minister is a privilege and comes with significant responsibilities," Mr McGowan said.

"I am confident my team will carry out their duties responsibly and diligently, and we will continue to govern in the interests of all Western Australians.

"My Cabinet team includes a mix of experience and renewal, with members from the city and the regions. Our new Ministers worked extremely hard during our first term, and have each proven themselves ready to take on a new role on behalf of the WA community."

The Labor government, buoyed by its hard-border policy during the COVID-19 crisis, secured a crushing victory during last Saturday's state election, reducing the WA Liberal party to minor status.
