WA to relax COVID restrictions for Perth and Peel as state records fourth day without new cases

Residents of Perth and Peel in Western Australia will have restrictions relaxed even further as the state marks multiple days in a row without recording a new case of locally-transmitted COVID-19.

From 12:01am Saturday, May 8, masks will only be required on public transport or at events and venues where more than 1000 people are present.

Masks will also be required in hospitals, disability centres and aged care homes. Residents of those facilities will be allowed up to four visitors per day.

From Saturday morning, residents will be allowed to have up to 100 people in their homes at private gatherings.

Nightclubs and casinos will be reopened, but will be subject to a one patron for every two square metres of floor space.

Football stadiums will reopen but crowds must wear masks while attending a match.

"Everything is being done to minimise even the slightest risk of community transmission," Mr McGowan said.

"Many of you welcome the significant relaxation of restrictions. It strikes the right balance given the ongoing unknowns associated with this global threat, and where we want to go as a community."

WA avoids border closure over new NSW cases

Western Australia will not close its border in response to a new cluster of cases identified in NSW.

Individuals in WA who had visited the New South Wales locations listed by NSW Health during the relevant times will need to get tested immediately for COVID-19 and quarantine for 14 days from their date of exposure.

The case was considered to be infectious from 30 April to 4 May.
