Bill Shorten has taken a hit from voters but still remains preferred prime minister over Tony Abbott, the latest Newspoll shows.

The opposition leader is ahead 41 to 37 per cent but voter satisfaction with him has fallen four points in the survey, conducted for The Australian on the weekend, to sit equal with Mr Abbott on 30 per cent.

Labor maintains its eight-point lead over the coalition two-party-preferred 54 to 46.
