Many states and territories, including Victoria, South Australia, WA and the ACT announced immediate closures for people arriving from hotspot areas in Sydney and Brisbane.

The sudden changes have left many unable to return to their home-state or being forced to cancel their summer holiday plans.

To help with this, anyone who booked flights on or before March 31 this year will now be able to access free flight changes to help with travel flexibility.

The airline has also announced 300,000 discounted flights to boost interstate travel once borders reopen.

Flights from $69 will be on sale between 4pm and 11pm today.

"We've seen many travellers' plans impacted by domestic border restrictions and so we're here to give them comfort when booking a Virgin Australia flight that they'll be able to change their travel date if they need to," a spokeswoman for Virgin Australia said in a statement.

"With a vaccine on the way, coupled with the fantastic way Australians have managed the pandemic, we're optimistic that border restrictions will be lifted in the not-too-distant future.

"Our extended flexibility will help to give travellers the confidence they need to make a booking and plan that long-awaited holiday or family reunion, knowing that the booking is protected."
