Victorians reject changes to Anzac Day commemorations in government survey

Less than a fortnight after debate about changing the date of Australia Day, Victorians have been asked for their opinion about another public holiday with Anzac Day now in the spotlight.

A survey conducted by the Department of Premier and Cabinet asked whether the Frontier Conflicts between Indigenous people and early settlers should be reflected in Anzac Day ceremonies.

Roughly one third of those surveyed believed that it should, while more than half neither agreed nor disagreed with making changes.

The government says it often explores ways to involve more people on Anzac Day, but there will be no major changes to how it's commemorated.

"Nothing's going to happen," Veterans Minister John Eren said.

But Mr Eren conceded that there has been analysis of ways to attract more people to commemorations.

"We're always looking to get more people involved,” he said.

The RSL has rejected the proposed changes, saying changing the way the day is run would take the focus from veterans who had served in armed conflicts.

"There probably is a day for it to be considered, but Anzac Day and Remembrance Day probably aren't the right ones," Victorian RSL President Rob Webster said.

"The concern I would have is that the veterans, particularly the younger veterans, would walk away from it (Anzac Day)," he said.

"To have that service changed, it would probably lose it's significant for many people in the veteran community."

In a statement, the National Congress of Australia's First Peoples said it would like to see frontier wars acknowledged, but not at the expense of Anzac Day.

"Just as Australia acknowledges the fallen in World War One and World War Two ceremonies, it is time to consider acknowledging the brave First Nations Fighters," a spokesman said.

"There should also be no confusion with the existing Anzac Day ceremonies as many, many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders also sacrificed their lives... Their loved ones commemorate their sacrifices proudly on Anzac Day."
