Victorian state election 2018: Liberal MP calls out Labor's 'rule breaking'

Shadow Treasurer Michael O’Brien has admitted his party’s messages didn’t resonate, but described the election victors as “rule breakers”.

In the minutes after Nine called the election in Labor’s favour, Mr O’Brien conducted a post-mortem of his party’s loss, shooting down the opposition’s “positive campaign”, saying it demonised Matthew Guy.

“Victors tend to write history… were they not watching the TV ads were they were attacking Matthew Guy? Did they not see the last four years where they tore up parliamentary privilege, and legal professional privilege to dump documents to attack Matthew Guy?" he said.

“This party has broken every rule in the book to attack and demonise the electorate.

“Sadly some of it appears to have flowed through in the results tonight.”

Minister for Police Lisa Neville denied Labor used politics of fear.

"We didn't put forward a negative campaign...we put forward solutions, and a plan for the future. That’s the difference,” Ms Neville said.

Mr O’Brien looks to hold his seat of Malvern, with 51.5 percent support.
