Rainbow of hope: Melbourne school holds special day to raise funds for vision impaired student

Hundreds of Victorian students have worn colourful outfits to raise funds for a year two student’s sight-saving operation.

Zach Kategiannis, 8, is severely colour blind, and is rapidly losing his vision to a rare eye disease called Optic Nerve Atrophy.  

‘Hope for Zach Day’ was held at Epping Views Primary to help raise $15,000 for a sight-saving operation in Germany next month.

“If I don’t get it I could wake up and one day go blind,” Zach told 9NEWS.

More than 1500 staff and students dressed in a kaleidoscope of colour to form a giant ‘human rainbow’.

An aerial photo of the colourful display will be given to Zach as a symbol of hope.

"I feel so lucky because everyone is supporting me, so I say a big thanks," Zach said.

Teacher Alana Couch said the “amazing day” had already brought in a slew of donations.

“It has been so amazing…so many donations coming in,” Ms Couch said.

“Students and families have been so supportive."
