Victorian premier’s salary package rises to more than $530k

Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan will remain the highest-paid state leader in the country as the state’s politicians receive a 3.5 per cent pay rise.

From July 1, every MP will be paid a basic salary of $219,391, following a decision by the Victorian Independent Remuneration Tribunal.

The Victorian premier’s annual pay and allowances will soon rise to more than $530,000.

Following the increase, opposition leader Jess Wilson will be paid more than $423,000 from July 1.

Deputy Premier Ben Carroll will receive more than $451,000 in annual pay and allowances.

The tribunal has also approved a 3.8 per cent increase to the parliamentary sitting accommodation allowance, taking the range to between $29,273 to $58,544.

The motor vehicle allowance has been bumped up by 4.6 per cent, offering leaders between $25,120 to $37,848.

From July 1, the commercial transport allowance will range from $5619 to $19,358, an increase of 4.6 per cent.

The international travel allowance will also rise by 2.3 per cent to $11,672.

In recent years, some politicians have opted to donate their pay rise to charity.

The Victorian Independent Remuneration Tribunal is responsible for setting remuneration for members of parliament, local councillors and executives in the state’s public sector.

The independent body was established in 2019, with the other states having similar bodies to set parliamentarians’ pay.
