Victoria's triple-zero call service workers to take industrial action

Workers from Victoria's beleaguered triple-zero call service ESTA are planning industrial action, but maintain the strike won't affect emergency services.

Workers will start industrial action on Monday, a spokesperson confirmed.

It comes amid a push for increased staffing and better working conditions as well as raising the base salary for trainees.

ESTA workers have been in negotiations for better pay since February.

Workers are demanding better staffing, access to accrued leave, improved training, more pay based on experience and raising the base salary for trainees, which is currently $48,000 per year.

A spokesperson from the service said workers will wear union uniforms, stop reporting or recording false alarm codes and relay union messages over radio.

They will also undertake work stoppages that do not affect emergency responses.

"The safety of Victorians remains our first priority and ESTA will work with unions and our emergency service partners to ensure emergency services to the community are not affected," a spokesperson said.

"ESTA is committed to ensuring its workforce is well supported and appropriately resourced now, and into the future."

The triple zero call service provides a critical emergency response to Victorians in emergencies.

The service came under fire in recent years after people needing emergency assistance were forced to wait on hold for ambulances.

A number of people died while waiting for their emergency calls to be answered.
