Victorian man 'arranged overseas child abuse'

A Melbourne man has been arrested and charged over allegedly arranging overseas child abuse.

The 50-year-old man was arrested at his Truganina home yesterday, a month after US authorities tipped off Australian Federal Police.

A person had made plans on social media to engage in sexual activity with girls aged from 12 to 16 in the Philippines, the US National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children reported.

Police yesterday raided the man's home and allegedly found child exploitation on electronic devices, DBDs and in magazines.

The man has been charged with procuring a child to engage in sexual activity outside Australia and possessing child exploitation material.

He is scheduled to appear in court today, and the maximum penalty for the offences is 15 years' jail.

AFP Commander Lesa Gale said the investigation highlighted the global nature of some forms of child exploitation.

"There are offenders who seek to use privacy and anonymity of the internet to identify and target vulnerable children," Commander Gale said.
